Flags of the World

work in progress

Redesigning a website. My eye fell on the World Flag Database. This site lists all the flags of the world, by alphabet. But I wanted to see all the flags, immediately. The result is a filter for flags; If you have one in your head, or just for the heck of it. "Flags of the World"

The Wall

Narrowcasting. Wall TV at Artez Arnhem, redesigned as an interactive information (touch)screen.

Curator

Curators are in charge of documenting and caring for the collection of musea, in this work we were asked to make our own documentation of a work made by Cory Arcangel. This project is based on an analysis of his work "Super Mario Clouds" and is meant as a flag for the "game"-generation, based on the fact that the people who played Mario will be able to recognize Super Mario Clouds, but others won't.

CMS

CMS stands for Content Management System. To create a CMS a set of rules must be made for the process of documentation of (in this case) a website. Through this way of working the result can be predicted, but the actual outcome will always vary. Editing the CMS over a period will allow for the makers to remove glitches. Made in cooperation with Ralf de Graaf

Conceptual Font

This Conceptual Font is based on a box. The three different fonts in the font-family together create a readable cube. The top-half of the letter may be seen on the top of the cube, the lower half on the left side, and the fill area will therefore be on the right side of the cube. Type specimen sheet and typable font.

Silkscreens

Series of Silkscreen prints made for a workshop by Harmen Liemburg. For the typography the use of songtexts was required, the letters are all from comic book covers. Songs by Zebrahead and Kiss

Zine

Zine based on comics. Seeing as the Minor Conceptual Type Design was also about Authorship, this Zine focusses on the dialog and storyline-text of the comic instead of the images. By removing the images and replacing them with only black figures, the momevement within the comic is adressed as well, which leads to a whole new interpretation of the comic.

Catalog Minor

Catalog made for the Minor Conceptual Type Design. The Catalog consists of collected works made for the Minor, which have all been placed into a font. The catalog is therefore typeable, and none of the original works are fully visible/available (which was part of the assignment).

Shadows

Typographic Poster. Research into shadows & typography. No computers or fonts, just handiwork

Biodiversity Library

check back soon
The Biodiversity Library holds a enormous collection of books referring to all sorts of subjects within our biodiversity. Instead of the current website, a new form of sorting was required. This processing applet sorts the books from yellow to white - possibly indicating how old the books are due to coloration - or the amount of care that has been spent on them, seeing as some books have been lost as well. By scrolling over the applet, year, title, and a short excerpt can be found.

Digital Pamflet

The Digital Pamflet is a shout out to the way people are placed in an index. After collecting all different kinds of indexations, this applet allows you to experience how we are placed in groups by the government. A picture is made, and with that, one of the names is applied to you. Nothing to say about it and no way to influence it.

Typographic Gun

The Typographic Gun is an installation which has been displayed at the Todays Art Festival 2009 in the Hague, at the library. The theme of that years Todays Art was conflict:

The audio-visual installation named Typographic Gun explores the subjective potential of the written medium. The library becomes the epicenter of a conflict between two opposing texts, opinions or ideals. The subjectivety is hidden behind interpolating typography, alternating at 5 to 20Hz, melting the two channels together, but at the same time generating the conflict by means of anticolors and after image. Any spectator can choose to block out any of the information streams by means of a color filter. And every book that has been loaded into the system produces its own unique soundtrack, converting sentences to a rythm of microtonal sound that add to the conflict experience.

Incident Arnhem

Incident Arnhem shows us the communication between government agencies concerned with an accident, in this case an emergency near the train station in Arnhem. This infographic shows us which agencies play a central roll in the communication.

3 Letter Words

All the three letter words in the english language have been sorted according to a newly formed alphabet. The amount of each lines in every letter defines the length from the centre of a triangle to one point, thus making the full triangle according to the value of the three letters. The poster is generated using processing. The first block sorts the words from overall smallest to largest, the other three depending on the different letters, first, second and third. The interesting part about this is how certain groups show up once the sorting order has been established.

LP Scratch

LP Scratches is based on the grooves of an LP-player. Instead of following the grooves in the LP's, resulting in music, other objects have been scratched in order to see what sound it creates and how the sounds differ from each other. As each surface has its own grooves they will all create a unique sound and visualized design of that sound.

The large images show a stacked combination of multiple recordings of the object. The top two rows were pre-recorded with the LP-needle as sound, while the last row in the poster is a direct, lower-quality recording. Sound Recording has been made in Processing connected with an LP-needle.

TimeData

Interactive Infographic showing us a map of the world, with the World Heritage Sites on it. Scrolling from left to right will make you travel through the years, while three different options (C,N,M) allow you to chose what kind of sites you'd like to see on the map (Cultural, Natural, Both). Clicking the locations will reveal the country you've selected. Made in Processing.

Hof van Justitie

Hof van Justitie is an Infographic about the European Court of Law. The Court is something we are all familiar with, but I think it's safe to say that a lot of people don't really know how the Court of Law functions, and who its members are. This poster is the result of research done about who the members of the Court are and how it functions.

Chatbox

Chatbox with a genre. This chatbox is inspired by music and different styles. In this chatbox users chat by using a database of their own music. Only words from your listened music can be used. This way some people might understand each other, while others may not.

the 'Play' Buttons and 'View Written Text' Buttons work and allow you to listen to the conversation (and read it)

Free Run

Finding a new way of using the city (Arnhem) in an informal way. For this example I chose free-running, and tried to create an interactive display-system that could keep up with the speed of the actual run, and still be clear enough for the user to not have to stop

Certain groups use the city in an entire different way then the majority of the people do. Choose one of these groups and create a system for them which might be an influence and an improvement to their own, informal way of using the city.
